Who This Guide Is For

For homeowners turning a garage, basement or spare room into a golf simulator, and for small businesses adding a bay or two.

First build? Read the chapters in order. Each decision sets up the next: your room picks the launch monitor, your enclosure sets the screen size, and the screen places the projector.

Upgrading? Jump to the chapter you need. Every chapter gives real numbers you can check against your space.

This guide is for you if

  • You have a space in mind and want to know if a simulator will fit
  • You are planning a complete simulator build and want to compare every part: launch monitors, enclosures, projectors and more
  • You want a realistic budget before you buy anything
  • You own a simulator and want to upgrade one part of it

The Three Numbers That Decide Everything

Measure the ceiling first. It is the hardest number to change.

  • Ceiling height: top of your mat to the lowest beam, duct or light over your swing. 9' is our recommendation for overhead launch monitors; floor camera, radar and hybrid units only need room to swing a club.
  • Depth: screen wall to back wall. It holds 1' behind the screen, 10' to the ball and room to swing.
  • Width: wall to wall at the narrowest point of the room. It sets your screen size and whether the room is single dexterity or dual dexterity (lefties and righties share one tee).
What to decide in this chapter
  1. Ceiling, depth and width
  2. Single or dual dexterity
  3. Garage, basement or room
  4. Outlets and cable runs

The projector hangs just behind the tee, with its lens no higher than the top of the screen; the overhead launch monitor hangs 3'6" in front of the ball. The dashed circle is a 6' golfer's driver swing.
Ceiling rule of thumbYour height + 3' to 4' for a driver, plus your mat (1-1/4" to 2-3/4"). A 6' golfer needs about 9' to 10'. Prove it with the swing test in section 1.2.

Helpful tipCheck your room against the table above. Ceiling under 9'? Film your golf swing from the caddie view (the camera faces you from across the ball) to see if you have enough room to swing. Short on depth or width? Book a free consultation before you buy.

Every number in a design plan starts with the room's measurements. Here is how this one checks out against the table.

  • 18' deep: 1' behind the screen, 10' from the screen to the ball and 7' behind it.
  • 14'6" wide: just over the 14' minimum for dual dexterity, so the tee sits in the center of the mat.
  • Uneekor EYE XO2: on the ceiling 3'6" in front of the tee. Its 11' power cable needs a grounded outlet at the ceiling, and its Cat 6 cable runs straight to the PC's Ethernet port.
  • BenQ AK900ST: on the ceiling behind the tee, 13' to 14'4" from the screen, with an outlet at the mount and an HDMI run to the PC.

Measure the room you have, not the one on the plans. Then tape the layout on the floor and swing in it.

What you need

A 25' tape measure, a laser distance measurer, a level, painter's tape, your driver, a mat as thick as the one you plan to use and your phone.

How to measure

  1. Screen wall: pick the wall the ball flies toward and sketch the room from above.
  2. Width: measure wall to wall at the narrowest point of the room.
  3. Depth: along the center line, wall to wall. Note stairs and posts.
  4. Ceiling: at the screen, tee and projector spot. Record the lowest point within 6' of where you stand and where the enclosure or impact screen will be positioned.
  5. Mark and photograph obstructions, outlets, the electrical panel and any floor slope.
Pro tipWhile measuring your ceiling height, subtract the thickness of your hitting mat.

Obstruction checklist

  • Beams, ducts and soffits set your real ceiling.
  • Lights belong even with the hitting area or behind it, on dimmer switches. Lights off to the side can cast shadows; lights centered on the strike point are ideal.
  • Posts eat width and don't belong in the swing zone.
  • Windows and doors: light washes out the picture, glass is a strike risk, and no door should open into the swing zone.
  • Metal buildings are not ideal for a simulator: metal can affect the accuracy of radar launch monitors (FlightScope Mevo Gen2 and Trackman 4).

Mock it up

  1. Tape the screen outline 1' off the wall and mark the tee area 10' from the screen. Mark the projector spot and the launch monitor spot on the floor (in front of the tee area if you're using an overhead launch monitor).
  2. Make slow driver swings and film your swing from the caddie view to see if you have enough ceiling height.
  3. Check that doors, posts or any other objects don't impede your swing.
What this means for your room

Your lowest ceiling point, narrowest width and center-line depth are the numbers that count. Book a free consultation and send us your sketch.

1.3

Garage, Basement or Dedicated Room

Each room has one problem to solve first: the door in a garage, access in a basement (getting everything down the stairs), limited space in a spare room.

A built-in impact screen and golf room curtain in a garage, with a car parked beside the bay
Garage bay
Garage
Pros
  • A dual-purpose room that still works for storage
  • Often open joists to mount into
  • Suits freestanding enclosures or retractable impact screens
Cons
  • Door tracks and opener crowd the ceiling
  • Heat and cold can make for inconsistent practice and play conditions
  • Sloped concrete and light leaks at the door
  • Garage acoustics echo more
Fix first: plan around the door tracks, then insulate and add heating and cooling (a ductless mini-split works well).
A finished basement with a built-in golf simulator bay at the far end, the screen showing a fairway, beside a sofa, recliner and a wet bar
Basement bay
Basement
Pros
  • Easiest to darken, for a brighter picture
  • Steadier temperatures than a garage
  • A dedicated practice and play space
Cons
  • Generally a more restrictive ceiling height
  • The highest humidity risk
  • Stairs and tight turns for deliveries
Fix first: access, then moisture. Measure the stairs, turns and doorways for deliveries, fix leaks and keep humidity below 60% (30% to 50% is ideal), then map every beam and duct.
A built-in impact screen with padded walls and ceiling panels over green turf
Dedicated room
Dedicated or spare room
Pros
  • Climate control is already in place
  • The bay stays set up full time
  • New builds: frame a 10' ceiling and pre-wire
Cons
  • Depth and width are fixed without a remodel
  • Windows near the screen need covering
Fix first: depth and width. Plan 15' deep (18' recommended) and 10' wide for single dexterity or 14' for dual dexterity.
What this means for your room

Pick the room with the most height and floor space. Climate, moisture and light can be fixed; more height, depth or width takes a remodel. Torn between two? Book a free consultation.

Outlets

  • Projector: a ceiling outlet within 3' of the mount.
  • Overhead launch monitor: a ceiling outlet at its mount.
  • PC: an outlet at the PC.
  • Touch screen: an outlet at the touch screen.
  • Optional: an outlet near the tee for a floor launch monitor (some run on batteries).

Lighting

  • Dimmable lights on their own switch.
  • Never aim lights at the screen.
  • Keep lights outside the enclosure area, about 8' back, even with the hitting area or behind it (section 1.2).

Heat and climate

  • The projector, PC and screens give off heat while you play, so plan cooling as well as heating for a closed room.
  • BenQ rates its golf projectors for 32°F to 104°F; desktop PCs are typically rated for 50°F to 95°F.
What this means for your room

Plan outlets for the projector and any overhead launch monitor, at least one at the PC, one at the touch screen, and one near the tee if you use a floor-based launch monitor.

2.1

Overhead, Floor Camera or Radar?

Your launch monitor reads each shot from the ceiling, the floor beside the ball or the floor behind you. That spot decides what your room must give it, so choose the type first and the model second.

What to decide in this chapter
  1. Your tracking type (below)
  2. A model that fits your room (section 2.2)
  3. Your pick from our best sellers (section 2.3)

OverheadFloor cameraRadar
Where it tracks Ceiling cameras, most 2' to 4' in front of the ball (the EYE XR hangs 3'6" behind). Floor cameras 14" to 2' from the ball, on the side across from you. Radar 7' to 8' behind the ball (5' to 10', by model) follows the ball in flight; some add a camera.
Room needs Ceiling height (most hang 9' to 10' up) and a joist to mount on. Room to swing, plus a riser if your mat is raised. Depth: 17' minimum, 18' recommended.
Dual dexterity Lefties and righties share one tee. Nothing moves. Move the unit to the other side; set it to left-handed. Usually stays put; some set handedness in the app.
Pros + Nothing on the floor
+ Adds no depth to the room
+ No ceiling mount or wiring
+ Many run on battery and travel
+ Nothing overhead or beside the ball
+ Most go outdoors too
Cons – A permanent install
– Shares the ceiling with the projector
– Needs room on both sides of the ball if dual dexterity is intended
– Must sit level with the mat
– Needs the deepest room
– Best spin needs Titleist RCT (radar capture) or dotted balls
What this means for your room
  • 9' or more (from the top of your hitting surface) and a joist: any type works.
  • Under 9': floor camera and radar units only need room to swing a club (film a slow swing to check). Ask us about overhead launch monitors that work at lower ceiling heights.
  • Under 17' deep: skip radar units that sit behind you. Not sure? Book a free consultation.
2.2

Room Needs by Model

Overhead ceiling ranges come from each maker. Floor camera and radar units need only room to swing a club. Ball to screen is our recommendation.

How to read the table

  • Ceiling is measured from the top of your hitting surface, not the floor. Overhead units hang at this height; taller ceilings use a drop mount.

* ProTee United VX: ProTee recommends 9' to 10' (10' is ideal) and reports no issues at 8'8", the lowest we recommend. ProTee says 8'6" can work, but fast shots then need a ball with lots of reference points, such as a TaylorMade TP5, to read spin correctly.

** Uneekor EYE XO2, EYE XR and EYE XO: 9' to 10' recommended. Uneekor doesn't guarantee accuracy outside that range.

Built-in screen drawing from a real IGO design plan, edited to show a bottomless screen: a 15 foot framed opening with foam trim at the top and sides around a Carl's Place Premium impact screen that runs straight down to the turf
From a real IGO design plan, edited so the screen runs down to the turf. A 15' wide opening under a vaulted ceiling, so a header was framed at 9'8" to carry the screen. Foam trim (5.8" on top, 6.6" each side) leaves a white screen 166.8" wide.

How it mounts

  • Fits rooms at least 96" (8') wide and 96" (8') tall, with no minimum depth. Your swing still sets the room size (section 1.1).
  • Ceilings up to 11'. Taller? Frame a soffit or a header, as this plan did at 9'8".
  • The screen hangs on cables between four corner anchors, at least 1' off the back wall.
  • Building a header or side frame? Use 2x8s so the corner anchors and the starter panel fit: the bracket face sits 12" off the back wall and the starter panel adds 6", so plan 18" of total depth.
  • Padded panels are 2" to 2.5" thick and come in 3' depth increments (3', 6' or 9').
  • About 4 hours with a helper, or book installation through us (section 8.4).

  • The impact screen, made to measure
  • Four corner cable anchors with pulley wheels
  • Top and bottom cables with cable locks
  • Ceiling snaphooks and hook-and-loop straps
  • Loop-fabric starter panels
  • Three detached flaps (top and sides)
  • Optional: foam inserts (section 3.3)

You add the hitting surface, launch monitor, projector and PC.

Pro tip: padded walls protect bestFoam-padded panels give your walls the most protection from mishits. Acoustic tiles are thicker than carpet tiles but protect less than panels; carpet tiles mostly add looks, some sound damping and light control. Curtains suit rooms that do double duty. Mat, Hitting Strip or Custom Flooring?

Choose the hitting surface first: its height sets the height of the floor around it.

Hitting mat

One piece you stand and hit on
  • Simplest start, nothing to build
  • Swappable strip on best sellers
  • Leaves a 1-1/4" to 2-3/4" step
  • Can slide on bare concrete

Strip set into turf

An EZTee strip set flush in turf
  • Flush floor, no lip to step over
  • Turf doubles as a putting green
  • Base and turf must match the strip height
  • Needs height math before you buy

Custom flooring kit

Base, turf, strip and cups, sized to your room
  • Every height already matches
  • Putting cups built into the floor
  • Highest cost of the three
  • Sized for one room or enclosure

Center, Offset, Full Width or Insert?

Match the layout to who plays: single dexterity (an off-center strip for righties or lefties) or dual dexterity (a center strip lefties and righties share). Strip mats 9' wide or more are center mats; narrower ones are offset. Mats with no strip work either way.

Build the Floor Up to the Strip

A strip set into turf only works if the floor rises to meet it. The rule: base + turf = strip height.

A single-level floor. The hitting area sits flush in the putting turf, so there is no step at its edge.

How the floor goes in

  1. Lay the foam tiles across the floor. Each tile covers 2' x 2', so a 15' x 12' area takes 45 tiles.
  2. Roll the turf out over the tiles.
  3. Cut an opening through the turf and tiles, and drop in the strip.

Choosing your putting turf

  • Plan for one piece. Turf is cut to length from a 12' or 15' wide roll, so most bays need no seam.
  • Green or black is a style call. NP45 Black has the same pile, height and price as NP45 Green.
  • Pick your speed. Money Putt, Bermuda Black and SIGPRO flooring roll at 9-10 on the stimp; Big Moss V2 rolls at 14.
  • Ramp or flush. Big Moss GST turf comes with a ramp up to your mat. For a flush floor, use the turf height (section 4.1).

Where the Projector Goes

A golf projector has two good homes: on the ceiling, slightly behind the tee, or on the floor in front of it. We recommend the ceiling.

1Ceiling, slightly behind the teeOur pick
Lens zone: up to 3' to 4' behind the golfer BenQ AK700ST Lens level with the screen top Uneekor EYE XO2 Impact screen Ball to screen 10' 1'
Pros
  • Out of the swing and ball path
  • Least shadow
Cons
  • Permanent
  • You drill into joists
  • You run power and HDMI to the ceiling

Takes a short throw projector (section 5.3).

2Floor mounted, in front of the tee
BenQ AH500ST in a floor enclosure Uneekor EYE XO2 Impact screen Ball to screen 10' 1'
Pros
  • Potentially no mount, in a floor case
  • No chance of shadows
Cons
  • Uses floor space
  • Higher chance of being hit by a golf ball
  • The projector sits in your view
  • Can conflict with where the launch monitor goes

Takes an ultra short throw projector (section 5.3).

Figure 5.1 Side views drawn to scale: an 18' deep room with a 10' ceiling, an 8' tall impact screen 1' off the wall, the ball 10' from the screen and a Uneekor EYE XO2 hung 3'6" in front of the ball.
Find your exact spotEvery projector and screen pairing lands in a slightly different place, because the screen's size and shape both change the spot. The four screen shapes (1:1, 4:3, 16:10 and 16:9) and what each one means are in section 5.2. Book a free consultation, call or text us at 310-947-8670, or try a throw calculator such as Projector Central's.
What this means for your room

On a ceiling mount, keep the lens no higher than the top of your impact screen and no more than 3' to 4' behind the golfer. Check the throw distance and offset (how far above or below the lens the picture starts) before you mount, and run power and HDMI only after you've decided on the mounting position.

5.2

Brightness, Resolution and Screen Shape

Brightness comes first: in a room with light you can't control, a bright 1080p picture beats a dim 4K UHD one.

Brightness: buy for the light you can't control

3,000 lumens
Dark rooms only. BenQ calls 3,000 lumens a good starting point for a smaller impact screen.
4,000+ lumens
Becoming the standard. BenQ recommends 4,000+ for screens 10' wide or wider.
5,000+ lumens
More ambient light. For windows, a garage door, lights you can't fully dim and commercial bays.

Resolution: 1080p or 4K UHD?

  • 4K UHD (3840 × 2160) has four times the pixels of 1080p.
  • A true 4K picture needs two things: a PC that outputs 4K (chapter 6) and a 16:9 impact screen. On a 4:3, 16:10 or 1:1 screen, part of the 4K frame goes unused.
  • It pays off on wide screens and when you stand close to the screen. BenQ says 4K stays immersive even on screens wider than 14'.
  • On smaller screens, 1080p looks fine and costs less.

Screen shape: match the aspect ratio

16:9 True 4K, widest picture 1 16:10 Our second choice 2 4:3 Fits most rooms 3 1:1 Limited spaces 4 Same screen height, four shapes

Your enclosure or impact screen sets the shape (chapter 3). Set the projector's aspect to match it.

Our position: swing cameras and DLPOur BenQ, Optoma and LG golf projectors are DLP. High-speed swing cameras can pick up color flicker from DLP (BenQ says tracking is not affected). If swing video matters, tell us before you buy: we match the camera frame rate, or recommend a 3LCD or LCD projector, such as the Epson and Panasonic models in section 5.3.
What this means for your room

4,000+ lumens is becoming the industry standard for golf simulator projectors, and 5,000+ is recommended for rooms with more ambient light. Pick a 4K UHD projector plus a 16:9 impact screen for a true 4K experience. 16:10 is our second choice of screen shape, followed by 4:3 (fits most rooms) and 1:1 for limited spaces.

A design plan places your projector for your exact screen, ceiling and launch monitor. In this one:

  • A framed header at 9'8" gives the impact screen a level top under a vaulted ceiling.
  • A BenQ AK700ST hangs on a 2'7" drop, its lens 9'4" off the floor and 11'8" from the screen.

PCs, Touch Screens
and Software

"Pick the projector first, then the PC. The picture you want decides how much computer you need."IGO simulator design team
6.1

What Matters in a Simulator PC

Six things decide whether your simulator plays smoothly. Here is what each one does, with the SG3 PCs as the example.

Air-cooled
Inside a SurfThing SG3-5702Ti: tower air cooler over the processor, two memory sticks and the graphics card along the bottom 123
SG3-5702Ti (the SG3-5602 and SG3-5702 also use a dual-fan air cooler).
Liquid-cooled
Inside a SurfThing SG3-5802: liquid cooler radiator and fans at the top, pump on the processor, two memory sticks and an RTX 5080 graphics card 123
SG3-5802, the only liquid-cooled SG3: a 280mm radiator at the top carries the heat away.
1Graphics card

The part that matters most. It draws the course, the ball flight and every frame you see, and simulator software leans on it far more than on the processor.

RTX 5060 for 1080p; RTX 5070 or higher for 4K
2Processor

It loads your software and courses and keeps the launch monitor, swing cameras and any other programs running side by side. Faster means shorter loading and cleaner swing video.

A current Intel Core Ultra (every SG3)
3Memory

Memory holds the program and the course you're playing, so the PC isn't constantly reading from its drive. Swing cameras and extra programs use it up quickly. Two matched sticks move data faster than one.

16GB for 1080p; 32GB for 4K or cameras
4Storage

Choose a solid state drive (SSD), never a spinning hard drive. The drive decides how fast the PC starts, opens a course and saves your swing videos.

An NVMe SSD (1TB or 2TB on the SG3s)
5Windows

GSPro, Foresight Premier and Trackman's software all need a Windows 10 or 11 PC. GSPro and Premier have no Mac version.

Windows 11 (included on every SG3)
6Connections

Match the PC to how your launch monitor connects: USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. If it uses the same link as your internet, plan a second port or an adapter. Stacked USB ports can share bandwidth, so several swing cameras may need their own USB card.

2.5G Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6E, plenty of USB 3.2
4x
A 4K frame has four times the pixels of 1080p (8.3 million vs 2.1 million), so it needs a far stronger graphics card to stay smooth.
60+ fps
Most projectors refresh 60 times a second. For smooth play, the PC should draw at least 60 frames per second; under 30 looks choppy.
Choose the PC lastOnce you know your launch monitor, software, projector and whether you'll add swing cameras, you know exactly how much PC you need. Book a free consultation to match it to your build.
6.2

Touch Screens

A touch screen beside the tee lets you change clubs, aim and courses with a tap, so you never walk back to a keyboard and mouse.

Match your touch screen to your projector

A 4K projector needs a 4K touch screen to match it. With a 1080p projector, a 1080p touch screen is all you need. Showing the same picture on both screens (mirroring) is also the easiest way to get touch working.

Stand or mountThe Touch Screen Guru 24", 27" and 32" screens and the SurfThing DT2424H come with a stand. The others need a VESA stand or wall mount.
Cable and setupTouch works over a USB cable from the PC. A passive USB 2.0 cable reaches about 16'; past that, use an active USB extension.

"From" prices are for one Trackman iO; the DUO version (two units, for bays under 14' wide) is $18,995 with Home and $28,495 with Home Complete. Trackman 4 ($25,995) needs the Home Complete subscription ($1,100 a year), sold separately.

Why golfers pay more

1More numbers on every shot

Home measures 15 numbers per shot. Home Complete measures 23, adding club data such as club path and face angle; angle of attack and low point now cover every club, wedges included. Trackman 4 gives you more than 40.

2Practice that keeps score

Performance Center tests your shot-making with Strokes Gained scoring, and Map My Bag builds a true distance for every club.

3Instant impact video

On the range, the Trackman iO plays a 4-second impact video right after each shot. Shot Analysis (Home Complete) replays it with your club path and launch direction drawn over it.

4One system, trusted by the pros

The launch monitor and the software come from the same maker, trusted by leading touring professionals and world-class instructors.

Foresight Premier and Foresight+

Foresight Premier is Foresight's new simulator software for Windows PCs, and it replaces Foresight's FSX software. A Foresight+ membership runs Premier in your simulator and the Foresight app on the range, all on one account.

Every new Foresight launch monitor includes 30 days of Foresight+ Gold with Course Pass Pro. After that, course play needs Silver or Gold plus a course pass.

Why golfers pay more

1Real courses in 4K

Premier plays full rounds on real courses rendered in 4K, with multiple tees, pin placements and several putting modes.

2One account

One membership covers Premier in your simulator and the Foresight app on the range, so every session lands in one place.

3Room to grow

Gold opens GSPro (not on the GC2) and other third-party software when you want more courses or games.

Sneak Peek:
New IGO Products

"Everything on one level: the hitting strip sits flush with the turf, so the step at the edge of the mat is gone."IGO simulator design team

IGO Single-Level Golf Simulator Flooring

A mat on a bare floor leaves a step at its edge and nowhere to putt. Single-Level flooring is our own turnkey floor: it puts the whole bay on one level.

What is in the floor, bottom to top

  1. Tile base: interlocking 10" x 10" plastic tiles with pre-cut perimeter edging
  2. Putting cups set into the base
  3. IGO Local Muni Putting Turf, green or black
  4. IGO Local Muni Hitting Strip or Golf Mat, level with the turf
  5. Your enclosure on top

Why one level

Putt between swingsPutting cups set into the floor let you practice your putting between shots.
A quieter bayThe tile base is designed to cut impact noise and keep balls from bouncing around after they hit the screen.
Pick your hitting surfaceThe IGO Local Muni Hitting Strip, or a golf mat from 5' x 5' to 5' x 10', depending on your enclosure (section 9.2).
9.2

IGO Local Muni Hitting Strips and Golf Mats

Our own hitting surfaces, designed to create the fairway lies you'd find at your local muni: a standalone hitting strip, and a golf mat in six sizes.

IGO Local Muni Hitting Strip with a golf ball
30" 12" Top view 1.25" Side view
Drawn to scale. Top and side view, with a golf ball for size.

IGO Local Muni Hitting Strip

The same strip that sits flush in our Single-Level flooring, on its own: replace a worn strip, or set it into your own mat or floor.

  • Size: 30" long x 12" wide x 1.25" tall
  • Taller pile than a traditional golf mat, so it forgives mishits
  • Fairway lies down the grain or into it, on one surface
  • Drops into the 5' x 9' and 5' x 10' mats and the Single-Level floor
IGO Local Muni Golf Mat with its center hitting strip
5' x 5' 5' x 6' 5' x 7' 5' x 8' 5' x 9' 5' x 10'
Drawn to scale. Only 5' x 9' and 5' x 10' have the 30" x 12" strip.

IGO Local Muni Golf Mat

The same hitting surface as a golf mat. 5' x 9' and 5' x 10' have a center strip; smaller sizes are one piece.

  • Six sizes: 5' x 5', 5' x 6', 5' x 7', 5' x 8', 5' x 9' and 5' x 10'
  • Replaceable 30" x 12" strip on 5' x 9' and 5' x 10', swapped out on its own as it wears
  • Dual dexterity in the 5' x 9' and 5' x 10' sizes: room to stand on both sides of the strip (section 4.1)
  • Same fairway lies and forgiving feel as the strip
Pro tipMove your ball position around the strip instead of hitting from one spot, so the wear spreads out.
