We know you want a single, concrete number on the bare minimum golf simulator dimensions. But the truth is, it varies from one launch monitor to the next. These are the steps you need to take to find out whether or not you can accommodate the golf simulator size requirements. 

Start With Ceiling Height

This is the first dimension you’ll want to measure, because it’s the hardest to change after the fact. You can always downsize your screen or shift a mat, but raising your ceiling higher is rarely practical for homeowners.

9 feet is the absolute minimum. Someone under 6 feet tall can comfortably swing a driver without hitting the ceiling - but the margin is still pretty tight, and anyone taller than 6 feet will be stuck swinging irons. That’s why we usually recommend a ceiling height of 10-11 feet. This gives you a lot more flexibility to design your space however you see fit.

We’ve seen golf simulators work in spaces with ceilings between 8-9 feet. But there are a lot more compromises to be made. You just might not be able to swing a driver, woods, or hybrids - and at that point you’re paying a lot of money to just practice approaches and short game.

Measure Width and Depth

Width has to account for the impact screen itself with room on either side for the enclosure frame - and you obviously have to be able to take a comfortable stance. 

Most of the golf simulator impact screens we carry range from 8-12 feet wide. Add a foot on each side (at least), and another foot beyond that for standing clearance. That puts your minimum width at 10 feet. 12-15 feet gives you a comfortable buffer so the layout doesn’t feel cramped. 

As for depth, you have a little more flexibility with this golf simulator dimension than any other. We’ll talk more about this below, but it comes down to how each launch monitor has its own specific distance requirements.

For example, an overhead launch monitor doesn't need the same level of depth behind the player because it’s on the ceiling out of the way. On the other hand, portable launch monitors sit either beside or behind the player. Those that go behind the player need more clearance around the hitting zone. 

In general, you should plan on 10-12 feet of space from the tee to the screen - and another 3-5 feet behind the hitting zone for your stance and swing. How to Know For Sure if You Have the Space Needed For a Golf Simulator

The simplest way to confirm the space needed for golf simulator hardware in your room is to mock it up before buying anything. Tape the screen dimensions on the far wall. Stand at the tee position and take a few full swings with your longest club - slowly. The writing is on the wall (pun intended) if the club contacts the ceiling or your hands touch the side wall. Not every setup we’ve helped install has the ideal golf simulator dimensions - but they all work seamlessly. You just have to get creative, and you might have to make some compromises. But you can’t change the space you have without expensive renovations, so it is what it is.

You can save a lot of floor space by upgrading to a ceiling-mounted launch monitor. They’re usually a little more expensive, and you won’t be able to take the unit to the range with you, but it will give you more room to work with. 

You should also use a short-throw golf simulator projector. Standard throw models need 12-15+ feet behind the tee, taking up precious real estate that you might not have. A short throw projector only needs 4-6 feet!

You may have to pick a narrower screen if width is the constraint in your golf simulator room. It’d be nice to have a massive 12 foot screen to really immerse you in your favorite course, but it’s totally not necessary. 8-10 feet is usually enough for a solid setup.

One of the big misconceptions we see is that the golf simulator room size has to be ideal in order to be functional. You just have to make it work! That means prioritizing ceiling height first, then depth. Width is where you have the most wriggle room.

Things look a little different when it comes to how much space you need for a commercial golf simulator space. You’re planning multiple bays and need a little more buffer to make sure customers/students/members actually enjoy using the space, so they keep coming back.

Multi-bay setups need more total width since each bay will have to be 10-12 feet wide plus a divider between them. Ceiling heights don’t change - you need at least 10 feet. Factor in walkways and viewing areas behind each bay so groups can all be comfortable while one player swings. Usually an extra 4-6 feet behind the hitting area, per bay, is plenty.

Don’t forget to account for ventilation and noise, either. Projectors put out a lot of heat when they run for 8 hours a day, and multiple drivers getting full-sent into an impact screen gets loud. These variables need to be accounted for in the golf simulator dimensions from the get-go.
