Your body might block part of the light bath if you drift out of the hitting zone since the projector is behind you. You also have to be really careful about bumping the tripod/cart. This could shift the entire image, and recalibrating is the last thing you want to deal with mid-session.

How Do Floor-Mounted Enclosures Work?

These are less common, but we do see floor-mounted projector enclosures in areas with limited space. The projector lives in a purpose-built box that sits on the ground, between you and the screen. Don’t worry - the projector is in a protected case in case you thin a shot!

Your body doesn’t get in the way of the image - ever - since the projector is low and close to the screen. The limitation, of course, is floor space. You’re going to take up some of the usable area between the mat and the screen, which could force your hitting mat closer to the screen than you’d want. You’ll also need an ultra-short-throw projector to make this work.  

Which Installation Location is Right For You?

But every degree of correction comes at the cost of resolution. You’ve probably mounted in the wrong spot if you need heavy keystone correction to get the image square.
  • Forgetting cable paths: HDMI has a practical limit of around 50 feet for passive cables. You’ll need active cables or HDMI-over-ethernet for longer distances. You should have this mapped out before you actually do any sort of installation work. Nothing more frustrating than getting halfway through golf sim projector placement and realizing your cables won’t reach, or that the space looks chaotic with wires everywhere.

Throw Ratio

The relationship between the projector's distance from the screen and the image width it produces. A throw ratio of 0.5 means the projector produces an image twice as wide as the distance from the lens.  So, 5 feet back produces a 10-foot-wide image.

Short-throw projectors with ratios below 1.0 are the standard for golf simulators because most rooms can't accommodate the 12-15+ feet a standard throw lens needs.

Aspect Ratio

The shape of the projected image. 16:9 is the sweet spot for golf simulator software and impact screens. We’ve seen a 16:10 or 4:3 projector work, but it usually ends up producing black bars or stretching the image. 

Lens Shift

This lets you move the projected image up or down without having to actually reposition the projector. It makes ceiling mounting more practical because you can hang the projector slightly off-center while still getting a perfectly aligned image.
