What If My Ceiling Is Sloped or Vaulted?

Sloped or vaulted ceilings complicate things, but they’re not a deal-breaker. Identify where the launch monitor will need to be mounted and measure vertical clearance there. 

You need full clearance at the apex of your swing, in addition to meeting the ceiling height requirement of the launch monitor for calibration purposes. In other words, you’re going to have problems if you are able to meet the minimum ceiling height requirement for your launch monitor but your swing is restricted by the lower ceiling height portion of the room.

Your best bet in this case would be to shift the hitting area forward or backward to where you can meet the ceiling height requirement of the launch monitor and swing freely. You probably won’t be able to leverage a ceiling-mounted launch monitor if you’re already cutting it close on vertical space. Look at portable or floor-based models instead:

Think About Width and Depth In Addition to the Minimum Ceiling Height for Golf Simulator

Your golf simulator won’t function properly without ample width and depth, even if you have plenty of height clearance to work with. All three of these golf simulator room dimensions must be in perfect harmony. 

Width Requirements: 10’-15’

The recommended minimum width for a golf simulator is 10’. It gives right-handed golfers enough space to swing freely without feeling jammed against the wall. However, you’ll find it a bit tight if you want a more centered, dual dexterity setup that can accommodate right and left handed players.

The ideal width for a golf simulator is 12’ to 15’. You get extra space to position the hitting mat in the center of the room and accommodate right and left handed players without constantly having to reposition the golf launch monitor. Remember: Floor-based launch monitors sit beside or behind the player, and you need adequate space to accommodate these requirements as well.

Depth Requirements: 17-20’

We typically recommend hitting no closer than 10’ from your impact screen while also allowing for 6’ behind the tee for your backswing. Additionally, you need to account for your impact screen or enclosure being mounted 1’ off the wall that it is placed against, which brings your total depth requirement to 17’.
Should you choose to go with a launch monitor that is floor-based and positioned behind the tee area, you also need to ensure you are meeting the minimum tee to sensor and tee to impact screen requirements of the launch monitor.

We have helped set up simulators in rooms less than 17’ deep, just be mindful that hitting closer than 10’ from the screen presents safety concerns and will generally result in wearing out your impact screen quicker. Ideally you’d have 20’ or more so you have ample room for your hitting mat, the option to add putting turf, and improve the realism of your setup.

Don’t forget to account for throw distance if you’re installing a projector. Short-throw projectors for golf simulators work well in most standard golf simulator setups with a room depth of around 17’, though you may need an ultra-short throw golf simulator projector if your room is on the shallower end..

Plan for Depth Behind the Screen

One nuance we often see overlooked regarding the golf simulator dimensions is a bit of wriggle room behind your impact screen. 

A golf ball can rebound with surprising force, and you don’t want it bouncing back toward you. Leave at least 12”-18” behind your golf simulator enclosure to allow the impact screen to flex safely.

You can bias the hitting mat slightly off-center to save space if you’re a righty and don’t have any lefty friends you plan on sharing the experience with. Otherwise, you’ll need a centered hitting mat and enough space on either side for full swings.
